New Book Study Begins

The adult discussion group at the United Church of Cookeville will begin an important new book discussion led by Ryan Jorstad.

 Book Title:

Acts of Faith:  Story of an American Muslim, in the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation

Author:   Eboo Patel

This book was chosen because it is a common book being read by Tennessee Tech freshman, and it has been considered controversial by some.  The TTU website states that the memoir is about the Muslim-American author’s experiences with racism as a youth, his lifelong engagement with interfaith service groups, and his belief that the common good is best served through an understanding of different cultures and faith communities.

Join us for discussion at the United Church of Cookeville!

Begins Sunday, September 28, 2014   9:30 – 10:30 am

To “Build a Living Faith”

To develop a sound faith with which to meet the demands and conflicts of this day and age.

To build a faith which will be a source of strength for the questions and challenges of this day and age.

An opportunity/invitation to share in the spiritual bounty of Scripture and the many resources of biblical scholarship.

To absorb that spiritual bounty through thoughtful, diligent, and intentional Bible study.

(A time for discussion, reflection, study and a time to share)

· your thoughts

· what you have been reading

· what you have heard that needs to be shared

· the Scripture text that should be expressed to others

· the Scripture text that spoke to you

· the Scripture text that creates a question or challenge for you

· readings and reflections on the writings of biblical scholars in the books of:

Jesusgate by Bringas

Sources of Strength by Jimmy Carter

Jesus, Interrupted by Bart Ehrman

Misquoting Jesus by Bart Ehrman

What Your Minister is Afraid to Tell You About the Bible by Terry Cain

Jesus by Marcus Borg

Our Endangered Values by Jimmy Carter

Reclaiming the Bible for a Non-religious World by Spong

(other writings, books, and meditative resources that you might want to share.)

· We have an “ah ha” moment of discovery of a new way to express who we are in Christ.

· We discover a new meaning to a treasured spiritual gem.

· We discover refreshing ways in which God speaks to us.

· We become equipped to meet challenges and “the dark” moments of our lives.

· We gain new strength/faith in the living of these days.

· We experience the joy of being with fellow seekers and searchers as we share our journeys of faith.

Based on the book:  Speaking Christian, Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power – and How They Can Be Restored

Author:  Marcus Borg

Location:  At the United Church of Cookeville

Sunday mornings, February 23 – April 13, 9:30-10:45

About the study: Modern Christians are steeped in a language so distorted that it has become a stumbling block to the religion.  The words of the faith have been narrowed to a faith that emphasizes sin, forgiveness, Jesus dying for our sins, and the afterlife.

“Borg cracks open the encrusted words of faith and pops them into fresh language that people can understand and trust.”  The Beatitudes Society

Borg teaches us how to read, hear, and digest our Christian language without preconceived notions getting in the way.

The dates for the study and readings are:

February 23…..Chapters 1,2…..Pages 5-34 (Heaven and Hell framework, Literalism)

March 2…..Chapters 3,4…..Pages 35-64 (Salvation language, the Bible)

March 9……Chapters 5,6,7…..Pages 65-96 (God, God’s character, Jesus)

March 16…..Chapters 8,9,10…..Pages 97-124 (Death of Jesus, Easter, Believing and Faith)

March 23…..Chapters 11,12,13,14…..Pages 125-160 (Mercy, Righteousness, Sin, Forgiveness and Repentance)
